Hideously scarred in a hotel fire Janos Szaby (Peter Lorre), is unable to find a job.  To survive he turns to a life of crime and  eventually becomes the leader of a 

gang of thieves. He commissions an artist to make a latex mask he can wear to cover his face, then falls in love with a blind woman, is happy for the first time, only to have it all go wrong. (1941)
