Kyushu Jitsu and Dim Mak
Kyushu Jitsu and Dim Mak
By Tracy Warrener Van Kruistum
There has always been an era of mystery surrounding the Martial Art known as Kyushu Jitsu. When translated, means, ‘ One second fight’.Another similar term used for this that people have used in the past is “Dim Mak’ or ‘Death Touch’.These are relatively one in the same with Kyushu term being the more modern of the two. Their principles are based on using acupuncture points to disable or eliminate an opponent.
Dim Mak was coined by Chang San- Feng. He was a Taoist Priest, Shaolin Monk and an Acupuncturist in the 1300’s. His thought was that the same theory of Acupuncture which was used to heal the human body could also, be used in the martial arts for self defence. Legend has it that he actually tested his theory on prison inmates. Later, Hohan Soken would use the same theory and principles and gave this art a more modern term, “Kyushu Jitsu’. Many martial arts such as Karate, Judo and JiuJitsu use some of these points within their self defence techniques. Practitioners who desire to learn Kyushu Jitsu usually study it so that they can understand the hidden movements and their focus in kata as it would apply to a self defence situation.
Basically speaking, Kyushu Jitsu and Dim Mak use the knowledge of human anatomy, acupuncture and martial arts to develop their fighting style. The theory of acupuncture which claims that one can influence energy flow also known as ‘Ki’ on a meridians of the body which can in turn reduce an opponent, thus striking on specific target areas. The claim of Kyushu Jitsu/ Dim Mak is that by using these pressure points one can eliminate an opponent either temporarily or permanently. Western medicine has investigated the claims of the ‘Death Touch’ and have not been able to collaborate this to be the case. However, one thing is for sure that certain pressure points can be dangerous and should only be practised by someone who has studied and knows this martial art. Injuries, knock outs can definitely occur. These meridians and pressure points can be on certain arteries and nerves which can cause damage if not practised correctly.
Despite the mystery behind this martial art, whether or not the ‘Death Touch’ is for real or not, or if one can reduce their opponent with one short blow to a special pressure point, we see that even simple knowledge of pressure points can be of value in the Martial Arts. They do not have to be a deadly, mystic type of technique. Some techniques that are taught in this martial art help to gain a person enough time to execute a defence to get away from a potential threatening attacker.
