Getting Your Child to focus with the Martial Arts
Getting Your Child to Focus with the Martial Arts
By Tracy Warrener
A common reason parents today are enrolling their children into Martial Arts training is to help teach them how to focus. Some children really struggle with focusing at school and at home . They are often rep-remanded for not paying attention. There are many reasons why kids don’t concentrate. The Martial Arts has been a proven way to help a child to learn how to focus.
Kids now a days are so over stimulated. Everything they do is for the most part, involves electronics of some sort. They are constantly being stimulated thru bright and colourful graphics and loud sounds. Often they are literally on a schedule of some kind from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed. Some children struggle with different learning and behavioural conditions that also make it difficult to concentrate. Martial Arts can help bring a balance for all of these.
Learning the martial arts involves much more than just learning self defence.Teaching children something as simple as a bow to their partner, teaches them to be present, to focus on their partner and the task at hand. When learning a kata (pattern of movements) it teaches a child to learn sequencing, memory of movements and focusing on this task. Teaching sparring to kids will show them that paying attention to their opponent is very important so they do not get injured. A good Martial Arts instructor will talk with the children about the importance of practicing the different types of focus; Eye, Ear, Body and Mind. Training in a martial art teaches the importance of eye contact, listening skills, body awareness and focusing the mind and not being distracted. There are many fun drills instructors use with kids to help them learn these.
Children who are exposed to learning a martial art learn focusing skills both directly and indirectly. Being a military art, the Martial Arts are deeply rooted in discipline and philosophy. They teach a student about being aware, in control of their surroundings and how important paying attention to detail can be. The martial arts are a wonderful, fun and exciting way to teach kids the value in being focused during their training which then overflows into their school and home lives as well. Many parents and educators recognize the value of using the martial arts as a skill when training to develop concentration in children. The martial arts brings a balance to a child’s busy lifestyle and its lessons stay with them throughout their entire life.
